AIS is a great invention, right up there with the zipper and Snickers Bars
In Response To: Thanks ()

It has changed my life as an offshore singlehander. I didn't change my watch schedule, a kitchen timer set at 25 minutes sometimes for days on end, but my anxiety level is so much lower. Now I'm not guessing as to what I'm seeing but know. I set my AIS alarm for 12 miles. And I get out of a ship's way. I always assume that they are going to run me down and in that way I have stayed alive. Perhaps I am being myopic, but between keeping my watch schedule and my AIS, I believe that the odds of being run down or of me running into another vessel when offshore are less than being hit by a bus when in a big city.
