reminds me of trailer tires

Lots of boat trailer tires have good tread but sidewalls are cracked from age.

I tried sanding them but it didn't do any good
I keep my racing shoes in a box or bag... maybe that helps.

They crack from UV.
yes it is uv, my point pointis that there is plenty of tread but it no longer is fit to use
