Catalina 25 swing keel owners call that a "keel drop". It can happen when the lift cable parts or the toggle corrodes out of the 1500# cast iron keel. The keel stop is he inside of the fiberglass trunk, forward. That happens to also be below the water line. Fiberglass always loses to cast iron, if such a drop happens it is almost always fatal to the boat.
