I think

Gene, that the amount of work required (cooling the box) raised at a much faster pace than the amount of sun received by the panels.

If I was to guess, it feels like, the amount of cooling in the Sea of Cortes raised by 50 to 75%. In the Bay area, the temps would normally drop by a LOT over night. In the Sea, the temps were much more constant at or above 95 Deg. F 24/7. During our recent 5 month cruise in the Bay area and Delta, Jill and I talked about this. We both agreed that a constant temp (24/7) was easier to get used to than the 20 to 30+ degree swing from day to night in the Bay area. On a number of days the temps would be over 90 d. F during the day and then drop to the high 50s at night!

But the amount of power gained by the panels raised by only about 10 to 15%. Just no way for them to keep up.
