I already had the US & Canada HD version for the iPad and liked it a lot. After switching to iOS7 on the iPhone, the US West old version kinda worked but really not well. Then a message came up saying it was incompatible. It didn't seem outrageous to spend $14.95 for the whole US and Canada for iPhone version. Yes, you do need to download the sections you want to use, but it just takes a few minutes to download most of an entire coast, and then it's available forever (until the next major system upgrade).
--------- Digression Alert ------------------
Yesterday we donated our iPad2 to the tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain, stopping by to see it and the Lady Washington in Aberdeen, WA yesterday. They'll be sailing to San Francisco next week for public appearances at Jack London Square Oct 8-15. While it's true that they practice traditional sailing methods, they very much appreciate having some modern navigational conveniences. The Gray's Harbor Historical Seaport, home for these tall ships, has taken over a huge former sawmill site in Aberdeen and is in the process of consolidating all of their resources to this new site. Among them is the spar shop:
http://www.thesparshop.org (you can view a video of the spar lathe in operation)
This shop holds the largest tracer-lathe in North America. They have turned the masts for many tall ships, worked on movie productions, etc.
They are bidding on producing the masts for the Oliver Hazard Perry, Rhode Island's new tall ship.
