I've always enjoyed my visits to Washington, DC

So much to see and do - a lot of it free.
Spent a few weeks in a motel in Crystal City doing some work for the Navy. It happened to coincide with a school vacation, so the wife and kids joined me for a week. They'd ride the Metro (beautiful system) into DC each morning and spend the day exploring. Kids were really impressed with the underground shopping mall at Crystal City.
Co-worker and I found a nice Italian restaurant up 23rd St - La Bettola? Had to walk around back to enter, and there were half a dozen limos lined up with the drivers leaning against the fenders, chatting in Italian. Head waiter looks us over and says "I'll see if I can get you a waiter who speaks English." He's leading us to our table and I hear someone call "Hi Al!". It was Jerry, a good friend from CT (probably also on Navy business) and apparently well known to the hotel staff. After that, we had two waiters looking after us, and could do no wrong. Food was like a dream, and the staff came close to cutting our food for us. A special evening..
Air & Space Museum is one of my favorites. Visiting with another co-worker, he looks up at the DC-3 and says "That's the plane my dad used to fly." I asked "Oh, a DC-3?" He says "No, THAT plane - I know the tail number."
I've got more stories (if you like, I'll tell you about the time I drove a B-29), but that's enough for now.
