Wife and I took a friend and his son out this afternoon. V light wind from the N quickly died, so I turned on the engine for a little sight seeing. Seeing the RR bridge open into Shaw's Cove, we headed into there for a tour. Set the radio to 13 (just in case) but didn't hail as the bridge was open. Went slowly to the S end of the cove, then returned slowly back towards the RR bridge - which looked like it was partially closed. Getting closer it looked the same, so I started a circle. I get a call on the radio - the bridge tender wants to know if we're coming out. I replied (explaining my confusion) and said we'd be through promptly.
This gentleman a) knew we were just visiting and noted the name of the boat, b) probably watched us go down the cove and back, not stopping, and c) saw me start my circle and wondered why. IMHO, calling me was above and beyond his duty.
Oh yeah, breeze finally filled in from the S (for 2 hours) and we had a pleasant tack out the river. Went E a ways then headed back S of the ledge. By Ledge Light, the breeze died so we powered home from there - slowly along the shore checking out the houses.
Fine afternoon!
