NOT ALL AREAS are the same.
We always try to get local knowledge when we are in an area.
For the first bridge we knew we were going to have to open we followed what we found that stated, "The Vallejo-Mare Island causeway and lift bridge connects Mare Island with the city of Vallejo. It has a lift span with a clearance of 100 feet up and 12 feet down. The bridge is equipped with radiotelephone. The bridgetender monitors VHF-FM channel 16 and works on channel 13; voice call, Mare Island Causeway Bridge. ..."We called on both. AND nada! Glad we had Rob with us on the trip.THANK you once more Rob! We used the phone.........
Also.... From the California Delta Bridge Information page at; http://www.deltaboating.com/bridges.htm That states; " While boating in the California Delta, you are sure to come upon a bridge. Depending on the size of your boat, the tide and the clearance of the bridge, you may find that you will need the bridge to open for you in order to continue on your journey. Most bridges monitor VHF Channels 9 and 16, and you can hail them, preferably on Channel 9, with your request for an opening. Usually the bridge tenders want you within sight before they will open the bridge"
We tried ALL of channels listed on every bridge we needed to open. Each and EVERY time, it took a phone call. Glad we were prepared with the phone numbers that I had written on our paper charts before we got to them!
