I'd still suspect fuel first. Did you bleed the system and try to start? That soot. Are you thinking exhaust blow by soot? sure it's not a slipping belt? If so, any chance your air filter is clogged?

I know it's an older engine but Check the easy stuff first before you check for a catastrophic loss of compression.
