Biggest danger in a hurricane

is the stuff flying through the air at 80MPH+ because there's more of it than large falling trees. Not trying to minimize the danger of falling trees though.

These mature trees fell in my yard during Sandy -- the white pine in the foreground was about 100 feet tall, and the branch stubs were driven 4-6 feet into the ground like a pile driver did it. The others were in the 60-75-foot range (Norway Spruce is seen up the hill, also lost a Maple and a Black Locust). Was sorry to lose them.

During the height of the storm I did not dare leave the house, out of concern for what was flying through the air, and kept away from windows. You could literally lose your head from a roof shingle or be clobbered by some other object.
