One of my amateur radio friends sent me this over the weekend:
Thought you would get a kick out of this. In the early-mid 70s I was the US representative for one Donald Crowhurst. It was incredible. Crowhurst was driven, driven, driven........ by a desire to make lots of dough and be famous............ hence his trimaran thing. But he was a really super EE and his handheld LF RDF was way ahead of the competition. Even had Murata filters! I still have a couple left and it still looks like something out of the 23d century.
In those days I was in the electronic instrument business (mostly export/import of scientific equipment) but being involved with boats I couldn't resist trying to do something with this. I knew all the competition (the other handheld units, there were various ones as you know) and for a while it was pretty cool stuff.
For a couple of years I sold those gadgets at boat shows, etc.etc. and it was a gas. It came with WW2 surplus RAF waterproof khaki headphones with large rubber flaps, REALLY waterproof, and they made ya look like something out of "Guns of Navarone"
