Hi Jeremy,
Hmmm, now there's a boat name that might conceivably become confusing during a radio communication, no?
As cchesley points out, it amazes me that all these CG writeups always conclude by 'complimenting' those rescued by having the proper equipment aboard with which to signal distress, and effect their rescue, blah, blah, blah... but never refer to the underlying causes of the distress to begin with... The recent directive they issued in the wake of the Salty Dawg Rally was one of the very few times I can remember their directing attention towards choices made prior at the outset of any voyage...
This one's a head-scratcher, for sure, I'd love to know more about the details of the boat and the trip he had in mind, but can't find anything online... I also had a look at NOAA's Data Buoy Center to try to get a picture of the weather on that date, and in an interesting coincidence relative to Doug's original post, every reporting station along the Outer Banks is currently showing "NO DATA AVAILABLE"...
best regards,
Jon
