People that have been lost at sea along our coast alone, are uncountable. I can't imagine what it was like to plan a voyage like this ill fated one in 62', prior to the weather forecasting we have today. In 62 they must have been pretty evolved for major hurricanes, but maybe not?
Not much before that time, ships would leave port unbeknownst that they would meet a major storm just a day or so out at sea. Scary.
I watched the captain of the Schooner HERON getting ready to depart last November(as they usually do). His eyes were glued to weather reporting on his iphone for a week before.
