Then do yourself a favor hold off on the ELCI for now. They have been very trouble prone, no not because of the ELCI itself, but because of our piss poor standards for shore cords, sockets & outlets that can so easily allow an imbalance to 30mA which will nuisance trip an ELCI.. They will also trip if you try to feed a portable gen through them that has a floating ground.

ELCI's are a GREAT idea but the same guy who fought tooth and nail for them is the SAME GUY stupidly fighting against the SmartPlug, which would actually resolve most all the issues we've had with ELCI's... What was it that Forest Gump used to say..... Stoopid is as stoopid does.... D'oh..... The ABYC had already pushed back the date for compliance for well over a year and we are now no further ahead at avoiding nuisance trips than we were 2-3 years ago.. Again ELCI's are a GREAT idea but when compounded to or added to the most STUPID and UNRELIABLE standard we have for shore cord plugs and sockets it is a death sentence for ELCI's...

I could write chapters on this but suffice it to say that unless you are a new boat builder mandated to use them don't just yet... If you decide to add an ELCI you would be best served to have the best shore power connections you can possibly have to avoid high resistance...

Leakages like this are not at all uncommon with the "Twist-Lock" standard for shore cords we currently use. Remember the ELCI trips at just 30mA or 0.03A..... Heck perhaps 4 out of 10 30A twist-lock cord sets I measure, with more than 10A passing through them, are imbalanced by more than 0.03A........ These cords should read 0.00..

Sorry for the rant. I like ELCI's but they will NEVER work reliably in the marine environment until we can get rid of the twist-lock shore plugs... A real catch 22...
