As well as the craftsmanship of the original builders, you can spot gouges and dings repaired and maybe a section that was replaced. This base gives some clues to the owner(s) sense of tradition, and how many times the spar has been stepped. I count five steppings, and somebody had deep pockets for one stepping.

- Beautiful. My 52 year old spruce mast has a few more dings than that, but still going strong.
