I don't text either. I GET text messages, and either call or email response

But it is NOT free, at least for my service. Since I don't have a text plan of any sort, it costs me $.20 each text I get. I'd love to turn it off.

BUT-

As to the rest- I cruised back in the early 80's, pre even ATM machines. VERY different now.

It's extremely handy to be able to bank, pay bills, make phone calls to the occasional marina, call a lock master or bridge tender for info on delays.

Not to even mention that on my phone I can get directions to fuel, groceries, etc, in a port I've never been in before using Google Maps.

Could I go without? Sure, and have, all through the Bahamas. But it's more convenient to have the information. I can also go without a depth sounder too, and use a lead line- MUCH easier to read the sounder.
