Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

sorry to hear that... but no doubt, still a cruiser at heart...
In Response To: I'm not a cruiser anymore. ()

I know when I go to sea, I very much enjoy being "disconnected." I turn off my cell phone and bring books... and I try to sail in a minimalist mode. To me, that is one of the charms of sailing. I also have the same attitude about bike camping. In fact, deep in the back of my mind I consider the boat and my bike part of my "survivalist training" for when the big EMP happens... be it solar flare or other.

The other thing is I work in high tech... so low tech "simple machines" are my "get away." By "simple machines" I mean levers, wheels, ramps and the like, in combinations that make sailboats and bicycles.

Now don't get me wrong, for safety reasons I do have a VHF, radar and GPS... but I try to stick to DR and paper charts, with that battery powered stuff as a back up.
