Sounds like the baffles also are providing stiffening for the tanks. If the welds are all okay in the starboard tank, and if you don't seem to have problems with it, then you need to approximate the same structure with your fix. I'd consider (unless someone else has a better suggestions) the superglue approach without any slotted connections.
