I think I like some version of this solution!

The superglue website says their metal epoxy has a shear strength of 2400 PSI. that is a lot less than a weld, but it would be easy enough to make the surface area of the angles many times that of the welds (the welds were point welds, just about a quarter inch square for each of about a dozen welds total)
