... while away from the boat. Strong T-storms had gone through.
Note that stainless whips melt at about 4,000F. (image) Note also that the coax connector unscrewed itself and went missing. The damage was random. Some devices blown and others not. I sent back all the Raymarine stuff and they gave me a "service" price to replace it all, including the course computer, for a fraction of the replacement cost at retail. Diodes in the engine wiring harness were blown out, mast-mounted fog horn/pager speaker blew out but right next to it the radar dome and steaming light were fine. The masthead light still worked but the windex was "blown to smithereens", as Yosemite Sam would say, and I found fragments on the deck.
No hull or mast damage was detected, although I had the boat short-hauled for a thorough out-of-water inspection, and I hired a rigger to go over the standing rig with care. Have had several rig inspections since.
(The CF mast has what appears to be a #4 copper ground wire running from the mast cap to the base, and from the steel compression post to a bronze ground plate below water. The ground system was installed by the factory at the original owner's request.) Obviously there were side flashes the main ground system didn't handle.
