There’s nothing new in this idea; it’s all been done before(and mostly failed). But optimism never ceases, so here goes;
“_______________________ Quarterly”.
Sailing specific; The life of sailing that is dear to many. The history, culture, art, present state, and, sailings’ future. A shared passion to preserve and promote this unique way of life.
Editorial theme; Simply good writing with sailing as subject. Submission Rule #1 Writers: “take the reader sailing”- no exceptions. We are determined to define sailing today, and expose it in a new light, to new and old eyes alike.
Regional; New England. So vast, so steeped in sailing history, it’s an overflowing treasure chest and unique source of sailing subject matter.
‘Sailing the reader’ could be incorporated in-cruising to coastal sailing- gunkholing to racing, -small boats- big boats-new boats-old boats, and all the people that sail them.
Boats are subject as they relate to sailing. Under sail or moored quietly, sailboats are characters in sailing. Our sailboats are our sailing partners.
Heavy on photography; We look for the language of sailing photography. Classic- sure, but better to see sailing in new ways to have your work included.
Poetry and sailing, shouldn’t we?
Art; as it pertains to sailing? Yes please.
Media Format; Setting a new bar of quality with a quarterly high resolution print magazine, a hardbound volume upgrade-because these will become references for decades to come, and an online version of the same caliber that can be re-invented.
We’re asking a lot of contributors(I wouldn't make the cut without a lot of work), so we’re going to pay at a much higher rate. Our contributors have a shared obvious passion(evidenced in their work), for our common theme. We truly believe that, together, we can grow sailing.
Financial plan;
Non-profit supported by a desire to retain and promote our global heritage of coastal sailing. Sort of the PBS Yankee Softsell theme of commercial financing-“If you can protect our resource, promote our passion, and sell your product…quietly, we’ll consider selling you space.
What we’re not; So much of the passion that defines sailing is lost in what sailing is not.
Boat work is very well covered in media today. The commercial side of sailing is important and relevant but must be content to join our primary goal to promote sailing, as a way of life. If you can do that, you'll be well rewarded.
