"Commons", I like that, Jeremy. My pipe dream is supported mostly by benefactors.

I don't see why it couldn't secure an endowment(hard work), eventually, maybe even qualify for some grants.

Prerserving the maritime tradition of sail, the public access for sail, and attracting new life along the waterfront-through a shared sailing connection is certainly as noble a cause as many non profits right along my coast. Ever seen an old yachtie with some money to burn? I have.

And I think as long as I'm dreaming, I'd nix the magazine. Maybe just two media; the online volume and a hard bound volume. Most would be reached via the web(it would take a really creative webmaster to cook up an online magazine that works as well as I would like). That would have to be something I'm not aware of right now.

The ______________Quarterly(maybe 3?) Volume would be so well done that it would attract some readers from other areas(short stories). And photography 'users', we have so many artists in that field.

The volumes would be distributed in NE- libraries, museums, YC's, marinas, harbor facilities(donations) and a few bookstores(for sale). Mostly it would sell online so it could be printed as needed. Price? High! But it would be a loser especially as so many will be donated(promotional expense).

The ________Quarterly Volume would be the place where nautical museums, sailing and racing clubs, coastal towns and municipalities would identify with(and advertise) as it explores new ways of promoting sailing access and preserving the waterfront. After the first volume, there would be a line out the door of advertisers wanting to get in.

The most important part would be the director. A skilled editor that can take the reader sailing, savvy in non profit financing-grant writing, and above all, an avid sailor that and lover of all that encompasses.
