No, things haven't changed that much but

the fishermen travel the coast with some degree of regularity. They fish the out of the way places as often as anyone else would around the world and you would think after this much time it would have shown up. While Mexico has a huge issue with drug violence and corruption I've found that the general population are just like everyone else. They want a good life for the family, they work hard and the're averagely honest. I'm not saying that the boat wouldn't be picked clean but someone would have told the authorities by now especially if a body had been found with it. It's possible that it just hit the beach and just sunk on site. Some of the waves hitting the coast can get pretty big and could just suck the debris right back out to sea just off shore. That's the crazy thing about situations like this. You could chase your tail for years with different scenarios. Maybe in a few years he'll show up dead of old age on a beach chair on Los Gotos beach, Z-Watt. Smiling. I can see it now, his boat anchored out, painted blue with a paint brush running a rusty Honda generator with a bad muffler. Let's hope so.
