He sailed with the original keel for several years but wanted better windward performance so he had bilge keels welded on. There was a bit of a fire during the welding, some furnishings got a little too hot but nothing a little money couldn't fix. After sailing Black Jack on the river for many years he built a bigger, more sea worthy brigantine, Fair Jeanne, which he cruised almost until he died. After Tom died, the Family established Bytown Brigantine and donated both Black Jack and Fair Jeanne as sail training vessels. Black Jack is still here in Ottawa but Fair Jeanne sails mostly on the great lakes.
