I too am seeing more electric, but a lot more propane engines than electric. They're not anywhere near as quiet, but if you have range anxiety it's easy to refill with spare fuel.
The current answer is TruFuel or VP Small Engine Fuel for my 2.5 HP Suzuki. So far it's been good, and considering how little fuel the Suzuki uses the price for better reliability is a non-issue . I can't buy anything but ethanol at the pump in my area.
I'm also seeing a lot more boaters switch to small dinghy engines (under 4hp) for the reduced weight. I think this is a reaction to the increased weight per HP of 4 strokes, and difficulty handling the motor on and off the dinghy. I gave up on planing and bought the 30-pound Suzuki 2.5 for around $700 last winter. So far, very happy to give up the planing ability and handling difficulty of a 9.8HP in exchange for a motor that can more easily be one-handed on and off the dinghy.
I seriously considered the Torqeedo vs. the Suzuki, but recharge time and occasional competition for amps aboard my boat (refrigeration and other electrical stuff) meant I'd have to buy a spare battery or install more solar. That would bring the Torqeedo total price to more than 3 times the Suzuki price. Carrying a $5 spare can of TruFuel beats a $650 spare battery all day long, and at a dock I can leave the TruFuel sitting in the bottom of the dinghy without having to use a cable lock.
