I'll give you that the turtle is rare, but I've seen one in La Jolla near the caves in years past... not just El Nino years, but as recently as 4 years ago... I had no idea they were around. Other swimmers say they do show from time to time. I was able to follow that crusty old turtle for a bit... he was covered in all sorts of stuff, and had algae growing all over the shell, but seemed to have little trouble moving about.
The hammerheads are a new sighting... and they seem to be all over So Cal these days... spotted in not only La Jolla, but Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and now Avalon.
The water temps are still showing 73 degrees at the CDIP buoys off of Torrey Pines... earlier this summer it was as high as 77, and I saw 78 in Mission bay at Marina Village. Usually the water gets down to the mid to low 60s by the end of October.
