As a backstop we figure anytime we leave the zone, we'll stay out a minimum of a few weeks - long enough that we would have time to deal with things upon re-entering the Schengen zone in case someone decides to crack down.

I understand there's a 'white paper' floating around because the Schengen participants know there are problems ... for example it affects rock bands who tour and need more than 90 days, students on visas and other categories besides cruisers. But who knows if there will ever be the political will to change, especially with the larger immigration issues these days.
