Either way works, but I prefer using the existing (old) halyards, and butt the two ends right up to each other, stitch, then tape over the joint. The advantage is you maintain a uniform diameter when it goes thru the sheaves and other obstructions. Sometimes when you go from small to big diameter it can get hung up. If doing it that way I try to smooth the joint with tape.
