I wouldn't suggest trying a shotgun shell unless you're keen on gaining notoriety as a front-running Darwin Award candidate. Cleaning, oiling and checking it over making sure the closing latch, trigger mechanism and firing pin are working properly is a good idea because it has probably been sitting forgotten and unused on the damp boat for a few years. I would clean any time you use it.
