Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

We sit here tonight on the precipice...

After 13 years in the Able Whistler 32 and 11 years sailing our Sabre 386, after more than 90 weeks cruising in Maine, 3 Bermuda races and innumerable weekends sailing locally we are on the verge of moving to the dark side...
This is something I have been interested in doing for years, my wife less so...
I can rationalize anything so I will not go into too much detail but suffice to say, it makes sense for us.
Dorsey has just had a (6 weeks ago) full shoulder replacement (a result of an injury she had sailing as a child!) and we were advised not to sail this season. She was told that she will undoubtedly out live the replacement and she is concerned about injuring herself again. This is the woman who is most at peace when on the water. Gulf Stream, Pacific, Atlantic, she has crossed them all. She loves being on the water.
I am more the mechanic who loves the systems and the water...both!
I am happiest working on a boat project but I too love being on the water.
We are far from old and we could easily continue sailing...but...
I am ready to move to power. Dorsey is reluctant but pragmatic...
We will miss the days of drifting along under sail. We look forward to the new experiences of slow motoring...
