I built a custom refrigeration system using a Danfoss compressor from rparts.com about 10 years ago. It is strictly a 12 volt system. I don't have any useful input regarding your questions about refrigeration types but we run our system year round mostly at the dock except when we are cruising. Our smart charger handles everything just fine with no impact on battery life.
