You'd need to be careful not to change the balance or wind dynamics of the needle, or it would affect accuracy. I think the only way might be to put one long (exactly vertical) spike directly above the pivot. If it goes off vertical it would put higher wind resistance to one side, and upset the balance when heeled or rocking.
