When people look at our boat they often ask how we like our motorsailor. I use to take offense to calling her a motorsailor as the specs. don't match one for a motorsailor. I always liked Bill Lapworths comment when asked if the Cal 46 was a motorsailor. His response was "I like to think of her as a sailormotor".
After cruising on the Gulfstar for the past 9 years I've come to the conclusion that she's not either but more a vessel that uses 2 different methods of moving through the water, both power and sail, and does each one reasonably well.
Why doesn't Walt Schulz just admit that she's a downwind boat under sail. I am humored by a comment on the website that she will sail at 35 degrees to the wind. I'll bet that although she may be pointing 35 degrees to the wind she's not going anywhere near the direction her bow is pointing. Not with a four foot ten inch draft and a powerboat shaped hull.
As you said "Interesting" a good observation. Interesting as in an updated version of Lancer motor sailor or an Island Trader.
If that's what someone wants, he nailed it.
