Less than a minute. That lets you run the basic program that comes with the GPS and lets yu know which port is in use. I have just realised we are slightly at odds here... I use basic C-map for charting and at original set up with this GPS I then had to go into 'Configuration' in the CMap program to select the port. However I didn't need to do any selecting within the bowels of XP.
