Going "up the creek"

Your statements are quite true -- but the other aspect of that is risk to the boat. IMHO that's what dinghies are for. Even though we have shallow draft capability, I don't relish the thought of striking a boulder with the running gear or hull of a 35+ foot high-value vessel, or of getting stranded aground in a contrary current that can carry the boat from one hazard to another.

Even anchoring in protected water, we try not to let the boat dry out. We want to preserve our bottom paint, and there's always a risk of getting a rock or shell jammed in the centerboard slot.

It's a whole different matter when the shallow draft boat is small/light enough to be pushed free with an oar or by wading then hopping back aboard.
