I did not have the benefit of a "magnet" program and subsequently loafed through school, lazy and uninterested. Bored to tears. My Eldest dropped out of HS and got in trouble. (the good news is, he has subsequently redeemed himself)

My youngest son is 7 and too young to be in magnet, yet. I hope we don't lose him before he can be encouraged and challenged, too. Right now he is reading two grades above his level and doing math three grades above his level. But, he is losing interest, already.

It reminds me of a friend whose daughter was reading at a second grade level in Kindergarten. He tried to get the school to let her skip at least 1st grade. But, the school policy was that the socialization aspects of each grade level were more important than challenging the student. The school board's comment to my friend (I swear to God, this is what he said,) "Don't worry, it won't be long and she'll regress back to the level of her peers..."

Boggles the mind.
