Sharing VHF whip with AIS

Installing a new VHF whip for my AIS is, at this point, a major undertaking on my boat. I know West, and others, make a splitter that is designed specifically so the AIS can "share" the current VHF antenna, apparently alternating transmissions with some sort of priority. Does anyone know the pros/cons of such a unit - i.e. will it adversely affect the performance of the AIS unit?
