Assuming you get the decent splitter, AND you have DON'T have a Type A AIS, it should work fine. I'm assuming that you are using this on a cruising sailboat (or other relatively slow moving craft).

We have a Furuno Type B AIS unit with a splitter now -- that works fine. It's essentially seamless.

Before we had a Nobletec Recieiver only, with a splitter, that worked fine too. (That unit and it's splitter is now in the South Pacific on friend's boat. He says it's still going strong for him.)
