This was scary to pull this up after a blowy night, only to realize that we'd hooked on that and not mud, as we'd thought...

I actually have a weird fondness for kelp, having lived for four years in Japan (where varieties of it are eaten, of course), but also having worked for kelp farmers in the northern island of Japan, where it's harvested and processed and sold (when dried) as a specialty product. The stem of some varieties is also apparently rich in a certain chemical that is used to treat some illness (which I've forgotten), and the stems themselves are removed for special processing/packaging.
