In my opinion, the stacked quarter berths are, well, pretty extreme in a seaway for most people to use the upper berth. If you're in you're on a race boat (and in shape, or replaceable at the next port)... Rolling out of the upper one in the wrong tack or a pitching boat isn't much fun.

I think that the v area sitting area just hasn't caught-on for a number of reasons.
