thick boards will not work the way you are going to do it

The dimensional changes are too great and the seams will crack quickly if it is exposed outside. Caulk is the only way to go. If you were to use a dimensionally stable substrate (plywood) and then thin boards, it will work.
that is what I have found out the hard way, anyway.

- Wipe edges to glue with acetone before applying glue..whatever you use.
- I've always used epoxy after cleaning the edges with acetone
