Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

I don't know, Jud - when you look at a road map of Newfoundland, you'll see...

Hi Jud,

...that although the south coast is the most accessible region to cruisers coming from the States, it really is the most remote region of the island... Once past Rose Blanche (about 25 miles east of Port aux Basques), Burgeo and the Ramea is the only settlement until Fortune Bay that is connected by road to the rest of the province...

In addition, with the exception of the area up around Gros Morne National Park on the west coast, you won't find topography to equal the majesty of the fjords of the south coast anywhere else further north, most of the rest of the coast - although still spectacularly beautiful - is a bit less dramatic, and more modest in scale...

FWIW, if you've never seen the film of Lasse Halstrom's made of the wonderful novel THE SHIPPING NEWS, I recommend it highly... Filmed on location in NFLD, much of it in the winter, it's a marvelous depiction of life there, beautifully shot, I recommend it highly...

You're absolutely right, however, it's a pity we sometimes have to rush through places like this... Better that than not at all, however... (grin)

best regards,

Jon
