I need to refinish my lead keel. The job I did in Turkey in 2003 is breaking down. At that time I used a one-part paint product designed for lead.
Based in part on prior posts here on CSBB, I am planning to wire brush to shiny; coat with neat West epoxy and wire brush the epoxy into the lead; when it begins to gel coat with a thin layer of thickened epoxy.
The West booklet says most bottom paint can be applied directly to the cured epoxy. I called Interlux to ask if I could apply Micron CSC directly, and they said to first apply their 2-part Interprotect 2000E. When tacky, apply a coat of CSC.
I then noticed on Interlux's website that Interprotect "is recommended as a universal anti-corrosive primer for aluminum, bronze, stainless steel, cast iron and lead."
That makes me wonder whether I can/should skip the West and use Interprotect directly on the lead keel.
Does anyone have experience with Interprotect? I'm inclined to think the West might be a better long-term bond, but being a 2-part product perhaps Interprotect is OK after all.
Thanks for any feedback,
Max
