Nah -- it's just a ruse. Apple wants complete control of the UI and they don't want competitors to use their stuff.

It would be easy enough to say in the product manual:"If you want maximum battery life, avoid Flash web content". If you use an Apple device all roads lead to Apple services (e.g. iTunes) and support (e.g. change a battery) .... just enter your credit card number.
They even have their own music and video formats while the rest of the world uses open MPEG and MP3. If Apple really supported "open" standards they'd ditch their proprietary music file formats. See "File format" at the following page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_Store#File_format
