Which is a shame as first that means that these batteries will become the failure item in the future and end up in landfills along with the camera body... and what the heck is wrong with using standard shape/size cells and developing around those.

I personally loath this whole trend of proprietary accessories from batteries, to memory cards, to ink cartridges, to even headphones... all this means more crap that has to be maintained by the consumer, and more crap that ends up in land fills.

In the area of batteries, this is especially loathsome as standard sizes exist and have existed for some time...

I have in the past tried to buy items that only used AA sized rechargeable batteries, but this is becoming more and more difficult as every manufacture does things their own way... I have even tried to stick to the same brand product in hope that they would use the same battery, and have found this also frustrating. This is a totally idiotic trend fostered by bad engineering and a throw-away mindset.
