"OK to buy new rope every once in a while" Begs the question...

() OK Rob -- Assuming we buy new rope on a schedule, what is appropriate? Here at 40 degrees North I like to replace rope after about 5-7 years, sooner if frayed or hard spots develop. Is that about right?
