We had one that I use to do that with. Turn to stop and then put a line on it. However it was two bladed. I slipped a line on the bottom blade (9" above your head isn't above your arm reach). Then let it turn back to the wind. While the wind blew the blades stay turned the line on stopping them. When the wind slowed down or stopped the line dropped off and the generator could start up again.
