Neil has it right. The only difference between

what he does and what I do is that I always leave my control line attached to a fixed point aft of the generator. I don't loop it around or tie it off to the pole. I tie it to the back stay or the davits depending on my mood and which has the better angle at the time. My goal it to set the line tight enough to allow the generator to swing with the wind to some degree but not spin around and around. As Neil does, I adjust the angle of the generator to fit my anchored position and the direction of the wind based on how much charge I am interested in getting. If you are contemplating using a boot hook then your installation might be introducing something different into the mix because most people know of do pretty much the same thing. We just pull the generator around with the string and tie it off in the position we desire. The only thing that you need to remember it that you cannot let the line come in contact with the blade! Ever! It's pretty simple. I'm glad this topic came up because I have never really had the nerve to just flip the switch at any speed. I always slowed it down by turning it out of the wind first.
