Is it common for a new belt to smoke a bit?
It shouldn't smoke. It's slipping, or perhaps it's the wrong cross-section. Any shavings (black dust) in the area?
I've had similar problems Max.
Didn't change a thing, just the belt.

get yourself a cheap belt tension gage
Rich - any idea how to spec a new belt?
Dayco 'topcog' or Gates BLUE
I have a tension gauge and I don't use it ...
That might work for a 'stable' vee belt
I guess we could go around and around ...
