I think it was because the hole in the wood contained the twist bit.

And that was because I was able to get a dimple in the middle of the drift to start. Plus the bronze was quite easy to drill, it may be suffered some electrolysis?

At any rate, once it started, the bit followed the hole like a piston through a cylinder only cutting the bronze on it's point and staying aligned by the fit of the tight fit. I went up a size on the drift for a snug fit. I hope the next guy thinks of this in 2049.
